But by the way… WHAT IS STREET ART?
Street art, also called urban art, is a form of art to be seen in the public space, usually on walls, on pavements, buildings or any other urban medium. The term “street art” encompasses a wide range of styles and techniques, from murals and stencils to graffiti and installations.
Street artists can work alone or in groups, and their art can be ephemeral or long-lasting depending on the medium used.
WHY PUBLISH A BROCHURE ON URBAN ART?
Since the XNUMXth century, Trouville-sur-Mer has been a source of inspiration for artists.
The earliest painters depicted seascapes on their canvases. The Impressionists preferred to capture the colours of the sky and the movement of the clouds.
In the 1970s, it was the turn of Raymond Savignac, a famous poster artist, to create posters for our pretty seaside resort.
In his easily recognisable posters with their very particular style, Savignac's "touch" was to slip a seagull into the picture, the iconic symbol of Trouville-sur-Mer.
The early 2000s saw the arrival of street art in Trouville-sur-Mer, with the first painted wall above the Hôtel Flaubert.
The streets of Trouville-sur-Mer have become a playground for many local and national artists, who have used the city walls to express their creativity. Styles vary, from stencil to spray paint to LEGO® artwork.
The imprint of the artists is everywhere in Trouville-sur-Mer.
Contemporary artists like M. CHAT, Miss. Tic, Gregos, Fox in Trouville, La Trouvillette, Levallet as well as anonymous artists have fallen in love with Trouville-sur-Mer and left their mark there.
THE ARTISTS IN TROUVILLE-SUR-MER
In 2018, the artist Miss. Tic, whose real name was Radhia Nova, marked the walls of shops and beach huts with her spray paint. Deceased in 2022, she marked her passage with self-portraits or portraits of women painted black with stencils. They will stay in our memories for a long time to come, with their cult phrases in an instantly recognisable style: "Man is a wolf ("loup") for man, and a drag ("relou") for woman”.
The street-artist "Fox in Trouville" took advantage of the lockdown to work at night on the walls of the seaside resort. As her nocturnal sessions progressed, the faces of inspiring women appeared in the streets: Jane Goodall, Nina Simone, Mona Chollet, so many women famous for their commitments. Their faces revealed by a stencil technique make up a first series created and scattered across the walls of Trouville-sur-Mer.
“La Trouvillette” appeared at the beginning of 2020 and quickly became one of the emblematic figures of our city. “He is a character who conveys values. She's a girl who is single, without children, who wants to be free, who does what she wants, who doesn't care about the eyes of others and who wants to explore lots of things" says her creator, who leaves Trouville-sur-Mer in 2021 to settle in Paimpol, taking her character with her to Brittany which is called… “La Paimpolette”.
Passers-by can admire the creations of the artists along streets leading to the beach, in picturesque alleys in the town centre or even discover some in the hills above the town. It seemed to us important to pay tribute to these artists of today whose works add colour and energy to the city, transforming the public space into an open-air art gallery.
